TOOL GUIDE FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION
List of important tools you will need to start
a wood work or simply a hobby.
Workbench - A good functional
work bench is the best way to get started.
Router table - A router is a hand
tool or power tool that a worker uses to rout (hollow out) an area in
relatively hard material like wood or plastic. Routers are mainly
used in woodworking, especially cabinetry. Routers are typically
handheld or fastened cutting end-up in a router table.
Sawhorse - A rack supporting
wood for sawing.
Block plane – A carpenter's plane with a blade set at
an acute angle, used especially for planning across the end grain of wood.
Hand Saw - A wood saw worked by one hand.
Mallet – A hammer with a large, usually wooden
head.
Combination Square – A combination square
is a tool used for multiple purposes in woodworking, stonemasonry and
metalworking. It is composed of a ruler and one or more interchangeable heads
that may be affixed to it. The most common head is the standard or square head
which is used to lay out or check right and 45° angles.
Spokeshave - A spokeshave is a tool used to shape
and smooth woods in woodworking jobs such as making wheel cart wheel spokes,
chair legs, paddles, bows, and arrows. Historically, a spokeshave was made with
a wooden body and metal cutting blade.
Marking Gauge - A marking gauge, also known as a
scratch gauge, is used in
woodworking and metalworking to mark out lines for
cutting or other operations.
Marking Knife - A marking knife (striking knife) is a woodworking
layout tool. It is used to scribe a line to be followed by a hand saw or chisel
when making woodworking joints and other operations.
Clamps - A brace, band, or clasp for strengthening
or holding things together.
Ruler - A straight strip or cylinder of plastic,
wood, metal, or other rigid material, typically marked at regular intervals and
used to draw straight lines or measure distances.
Coping Saw – A saw with a very narrow blade stretched
across a D-shaped frame, used for cutting curves in wood.
Hacksaw - A saw with a narrow fine-toothed blade
set in a frame, used especially for cutting metal.
Chisels - A long-bladed hand tool with a bevelled
cutting edge and a handle which is struck with a hammer or mallet, used to cut
or shape wood, stone, or metal.
Mortise Chisel - Mortise chisels are used for
'chopping out' joints (chiselling away the waste wood). They are particularly
useful for cutting mortise joints as
they are strong enough to withstand heavy blows with a mallet. The handle is
normally made of ash or beech with a steel hoop at the top to stop it splitting.
Claw hammer - A hammer with one side of the head split and
curved, used for extracting nails.
Level - Level, device for
establishing a horizontal plane. It consists of a small glass tube containing
alcohol or similar liquid and an air bubble; the tube is sealed and fixed
horizontally in a wooden or metallic block or frame with a smooth lower surface.
Jack Plane - A medium-sized plane for use in rough
joinery.
Calipers - An instrument for measuring external or
internal dimensions, having two hinged legs resembling a pair of compasses and
in-turned or out-turned points.
